Sedation Dentistry

Here at Kissimmee Children’s Dentistry, we do everything in our power to ensure that your child has a positive dental experience. In our office, we promote an atmosphere that is warm and welcoming – fostering a safe space for children to feel comfortable, confident, and at ease; that way, they can truly engage in the experience, explore the setting, and connect with our dedicated providers.

Our Kissimmee, FL, team members are all professionals in Children’s Dentistry, possessing the minds and hearts that make them exceptionally capable of working with children. Part of what makes our team so successful is that we take the time to listen and pay attention to our patients and acknowledge their needs and feelings throughout the visit. When children begin feeling nervous, we gently reassure them by listening to their concerns, answering their questions, and keeping them informed throughout the appointment. This approach often leads to children becoming more excited about their dentist visit and their fear subsiding over time.

While the above approaches often succeed in making our patients feel at ease during their visits, there are some cases where extra assistance is needed; that is when dental sedation can help! While it is common for many children to feel apprehensive about visiting the dentist, some children experience intense feelings of fear that hinder their ability to receive the dental care they need. Some children also experience sensory sensitivities or overactive gag reflexes that make the dental visit uncomfortable. Dental sedation helps to make these visits easier and more manageable – ensuring that children get the care they need while actually relaxing through the visit.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is a safe and successful sedative agent that can be used to help your child feel more relaxed during their dental appointment. Inhaling this gas is done through the use of a mask that covers the nose and the effect is immediate, causing the patient to feel calm and relaxed. Many children report feeling light-headed and happy while under the influence of nitrous oxide. Additionally, since nitrous oxide is a gas that can be quickly and easily eliminated from the body, there is little chance of lingering side effects from its usage.

In-Office IV Sedation for Children

We understand that some children need extra support to feel safe and comfortable during dental treatment. For children with significant dental anxiety, special healthcare needs, difficulty cooperating due to age or development, or those requiring extensive dental treatment, Dr. del Campo may recommend IV sedation to help your child receive the care they need in a calm, comfortable environment.

While Dr. del Campo is a board-certified pediatric dentist, IV sedation is administered by a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist who comes to our office specifically for your child’s appointment. This team approach allows Dr. del Campo to focus entirely on providing your child’s dental treatment while the anesthesiologist is dedicated solely to administering anesthesia and continuously monitoring your child’s breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels, and overall well-being throughout the procedure. This collaborative model provides the highest level of safety and specialized care for children receiving IV sedation.

Because IV sedation is provided by a separate anesthesia provider, anesthesia services are billed independently from your child’s dental treatment. Dental insurance may be used for eligible dental procedures; however, medical insurance generally does not cover anesthesia services performed in a dental office. Our team will review the estimated anesthesia fees, payment requirements, and answer any questions before your child’s appointment, so you know exactly what to expect.
